===Intelligence (Int)===

Intelligence determines how well your character learns and reasons. This ability is important for [[SRD:Wizard|wizards]] because it affects how many [[SRD:Spells|spells]] they can cast, how hard their [[SRD:Spells|spells]] are to resist, and how powerful their [[SRD:Spell|spells]] can be. It’s also important for any character who wants to have a wide assortment of [[SRD:Skill Descriptions|skills]].

You apply your character’s Intelligence modifier to:

* The number of [[SRD:Speak Language Skill|languages]] your character knows [[SRD:Races#RACE AND LANGUAGES|at the start of the game]].

* The number of [[SRD:Skill Points|skill points]] gained each [[SRD:Level|level]]. (But your character always gets at least 1 [[SRD:Skill Points|skill point]] per [[SRD:Level|level]].)

* [[SRD:Appraise Skill|Appraise]], [[SRD:Craft Skill|Craft]], [[SRD:Decipher Script Skill|Decipher Script]], [[SRD:Disable Device Skill|Disable Device]], [[SRD:Forgery Skill|Forgery]], [[SRD:Knowledge Skill|Knowledge]], [[SRD:Search Skill|Search]], and [[SRD:Spellcraft Skill|Spellcraft]] checks. These are the [[SRD:Skills|skills]] that have Intelligence as their [[SRD:Key Ability|key ability]].

A [[SRD:Wizard|wizard]] gains bonus [[SRD:Spells|spells]] based on her Intelligence score. The minimum Intelligence score needed to cast a [[SRD:Wizard Spells|wizard spell]] is 10 + the [[SRD:Spell Level|spell’s level]].

An [[SRD:Animal Type|animal]] has an Intelligence score of 1 or 2. A creature of humanlike intelligence has a score of at least 3.

A character does not retroactively get additional [[SRD:Skill Points|skill points]] for previous [[SRD:Level|levels]] if she increases her intelligence.

Any creature that can think, learn, or remember has at least 1 point of Intelligence. A creature with no Intelligence score is mindless, an automaton operating on simple instincts or programmed instructions. It has immunity to [[SRD:Mind-Affecting Effect|mind-affecting effects]] ([[SRD:Charm Subschool|charms]], [[SRD:Compulsion Subschool|compulsions]], [[SRD:Phantasm Subschool|phantasms]], [[SRD:Pattern Subschool|patterns]], and morale effects) and automatically fails [[SRD:Intelligence Check|Intelligence checks]].

Mindless creatures do not gain [[SRD:Feats|feats]] or [[SRD:Skills|skills]], although they may have bonus [[SRD:Feats|feats]] or racial [[SRD:Skills|skill]] bonuses.
